Question about a knockout.....playing first hand of a knockout. Declarer realized when 5 tricks left he had 5 cards and dummy had 4 cards. He said i know we are suppose to deal over, and he did. He was already down 2 vulnerable. I realize the Director should be called but was not. The declarer was a d...

Hi all: Imagine the following auction. N S 1c 1h 2s 4nt 5d 7s South has one ace, After the 5d call, a defender would like to inquire about the ace asking sequence. Who does he ask, and which bid does he ask about? At the table, East asked N about the 4NT bid. North said, "RKC.&qu...

Announcing Ace Asking after completion of bidding
(Preview)
Curious as to when it became mandatory to state that you and your partner had just completed an Ace Asking sequence and stating what it was. i.e., Exclusionary Blackwood, RKC, Blackwood, Minorwood, etc. Of course, after bidding is complete and prior to the defenders lead.

Alerts again...

Someone has said that the following bidding MUST be alerted" 1 Major Pass 1NT forcing Pass 2 Clubs (should be alerted)??? If you are 4S, 5H (not playing Flannery), 2D and 2C and not strong enough to reverse, what else could you say other than 2 Clubs? I don't see the need for the Alert. Aler...

Hi Bill: I was wondering about a recent hand. The auction concluded. The North player was a novice, and this was his first time scoring. He opened the traveler before the opening lead. Obviously, this is u-a information, since there were already two scores down. Our director ruled that they got an Ave...

Showing 5-4 in the minors
(Preview)
My partner and I often open either 1D then rebid 2C when we hold either 5 clubs and 4 diamonds, or 5 diamonds and 4 clubs. Should this be alerted? We do it to create a rebid when the hand isn't strong enough to reverse. What do you think?

How should I rule?

West opened the bidding with 2NT holding AKxx = Kx = - = AKQJxxx ending in a contract of 6S by West making 6. South held the AH and the AD. On the opening lead of a heart, South won with the A and played the AD - assuming West had a least 2 diamonds based on the opening bid of 2NT - which was trumped. South c...

Jacoby 2NT Alerting

Bill: Today, I was asked a question by a local player about a Jac 2NT auction. Person A opened 1S. Person B then bid 2N, which was alerted correctly as Jacoby 2N. After that, Person A bid 3D, showing a stiff or void. The auction then proceeded to game from there. The opponents later called the director, be...

Options for an enforced pass?

Bear with me as I set up the situation... South is the dealer, but West opens 1H out of rotation. North declines to accept this bid, so the auction reverts back to South. South now opens 1S. Scenario 1: West overcalls 2H (forcing East to pass once per Law 32A2a). North now responds 2D. Does East have the op...

5 & 6 person teams in a knockout
(Preview)
I'm frequently asked about the rules for having a 5th &/or 6th member of a knockout team. The rules are pretty specific, although they can be a touch confusing to read or hear. The rules state that each member of a team must play at least 50% of the total boards available for the overall award they are...

Call vs. Bid & what constitutes one?

At the Colorado Springs sectional this weekend, I was called to the table with an interesting situation. The auction had gone: P - P - at this point, the 3rd hand started to put his hand into the board, clearly feeling that he was passing the hand out. When he was corrected, he wanted to change his call....
